The city’s original name was Willington, after Thomas Willing, who develop the land in a grid pattern, but it have been influence by the colonizations of the Swedish (1638), then Dutch (1655), and the British (1664). Finally the King of England changed the name from Willington to Wilmington, presumably after Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington, a favorite of the King.
Wilmington has the Delaware River and nice neighborhoods with many bars and restaurants around Trolley Square and Little Italy.
The part that we most enjoy is walking by the Wilmington State park at Brandywine Park. Picking out some flowers, watch the runners and hang out by the river. The bridge was built in 1934 and is an arch bridge faced with stone that is part of the National Register of Historic Places since 1999.
